Change can be subtle. Sometimes it’s a shift in the systems around us. Sometimes it’s in the people we love. Addressing these changes early can make all the difference.
Over the coming months, a change to the UK’s phone system could affect some of the older people we support, as the UK’s landline system is phased out and replaced only with digital phone lines.
For many people, this will happen seamlessly, but for older people this change will be more challenging.
At Paperweight’s Eldercare Hub, we are already hearing of increasing uncertainty from families, particularly where a landline isn’t just a phone, but a lifeline.
It’s what connects older people living alone to friends and family, but importantly also to:
– personal alarms
– telecare systems
– emergency support
Questions we’re beginning to hear more often:
“Will mum’s alarm still work?”
“What happens if the broadband goes down?”
The difficulty is that not everyone has been clearly informed and not all systems work in the same way once switched over.
These kinds of changes can feel small on the surface but they can have a very real impact on safety and independence.
It’s worth checking:
– whether there is a telecare or alarm system in place
– whether the provider has confirmed it will work after the switchover
– whether there is a backup plan in case of power or internet issues
Sometimes, a simple check now can prevent a much bigger worry later.
At Paperweight’s Eldercare Hub, we can help to navigate these changes.
