Volunteering

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Many bring experience in areas such as finance, law, property, welfare, administration, education, healthcare, community work and business management. But being a professional is not mandatory. What is important is strong advocacy skills, sound judgement, patience and life experience to approach each client case with both care and humanity.

What unites our volunteers is their dedication to helping others with dignity, discretion and respect. They give not only their time, but their insight, empathy and determination, ensuring that each client is supported as an individual.

They are the jewel in our crown and their contribution is central to Paperweight’s work and makes a profound difference to the lives of the people and families we are privileged to help.

Our Volunteers:

Telephone Assessors
At the heart of Paperweight are our remarkable volunteer Telephone Assessors and Caseworkers, who give their time, care and expertise to support people through some of life’s most difficult and overwhelming moments. They are often the first calm voice a client hears when they feel unsure where to turn, helping to listen, reassure, clarify the issues and begin the process of finding a practical way forward.

Our volunteer Telephone Assessors provide a sensitive and thoughtful first point of contact. They listen carefully, gather essential information and help ensure that each client is guided towards the most appropriate support. Their warmth, patience and understanding are vital in helping people feel heard, respected and no longer alone.

Caseworkers
Our volunteer Caseworkers then work alongside clients in a more detailed and practical way, helping them navigate correspondence, complex bureaucracy, complete applications, financial concerns, understand and navigate legal processes, welfare and other complex situations. They advocate where needed, make phone calls, help prepare documents, liaise with organisations and authorities and bring clarity to matters that may otherwise feel confusing or impossible to manage.

Our Volunteers:

Are you somebody who….

  • is empathetic and who would enjoy explaining issues so they can be understood more easily?
  • able to advocate and can deal with bureaucracy
  • will gain the trust and confidence of our clients from the outset
  • has the compassion and focus to help resolve situations that seem difficult for someone who is in crisis
  • has some spare time and would like to volunteer and give back to the community?

If you’ve ticked several of the above you could become one of our newest caseworker recruits and if you would like to join our dedicated team we will:

  • offer training and ongoing professional development
  • assess and appreciate your skillset and allocate you clients with challenges you enjoy solving
  • ensure a super team of supportive staff is behind you, enabling you to use your specialist skills productively

Being a Paperweight Caseworker isn’t just volunteering, it’s being part of an inclusive, caring family lending heart, strength and hope to our community.

We are always looking for new volunteers
