A contributions-based benefit intended for people who are unemployed or working on average less than 16 hours per week.
New Style JSA payments are £75.65 a week for under 25s and £95.55 a week for people aged 25 and over.
As a contributory benefit, entitlement is based on National Insurance contributions over the most recent two full tax years prior to the year of application. As it isn’t means tested it can be claimed in place of Universal Credit if someone is ineligible for UC due to things like exceeding the upper capital limit.
New Style JSA awards are time limited to 6 months. It can be claimed at the same time as Universal Credit, but any amount of New Style JSA received is deducted like for like from any UC award.
